Tipping in Austria
Here's the tip.
Round up and say the total. 5–10% is normal.
Austrians tip routinely but modestly, and the mechanics matter as much as the amount. You tell the server the total you want to pay as you hand over the money, rather than leaving cash on the table afterwards. Trinkgeld is expected for table service and in the mountains, and barely anywhere else.

Card tipping. Card is widely accepted, though smaller mountain huts and rural Gasthäuser are still cash-only more often than visitors expect. When paying by card, state the total including the tip before the server enters the amount.
- Saying 'Danke' as you hand over your money means 'keep the change'. If you want change back, say the total you want to pay instead.
- To tip on a €43 bill, hand over €50 and say 'fünfzig'. You want to pay fifty.
- Many mountain huts (Hütten) take cash only. Carry notes on a ski day.
- A service charge is almost never added, so what you leave goes to the staff.
