What the guidance is
WhatTheTip publishes structured guidance on tipping customs, compiled from widely reported sources and editorial judgement. Every country record shows its own review status on the page, so you can see whether a figure has been checked against cited sources or not.
What it is not
It is general information, not advice for your specific situation, and it is not financial, legal or tax advice. Tipping customs vary by region, by venue and by year, and they change faster than any guide can. Two people in the same restaurant can reasonably tip differently.
Use your own judgement on the day. Nothing here obliges you to pay anything to anyone.
No warranty
The site is provided “as is”. We work hard to be accurate and we correct errors when we find them, but we do not warrant that every figure is current, complete or correct for your circumstances, nor that the site will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Greg Kockott is not liable for any loss, cost, embarrassment or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, this site — including any amount you did or did not tip. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including under the Consumer Protection Act, 2008.
Our content
The tipping dataset, the written guidance, the design and the WhatTheTip name are owned by Greg Kockott. You are welcome to read it, use it on your travels, quote a line with attribution, and share links to it — that is the point of publishing it.
You may not scrape, bulk-download or systematically extract the dataset, or reproduce it in substantial part, whether to republish it, to build a competing resource, or to train a model. The dataset is the work.
