Privacy Policy

Last updated 3 September 2026.

The short version: WhatTheTip has no accounts, no sign-up, no newsletter and no advertising trackers, and sets no cookies on your device. There is very little to tell you — but you are entitled to know exactly what there is.

Who is responsible

WhatTheTip is operated by Greg Kockott, an individual based in South Africa. Under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA) this makes Greg Kockott the responsible party for any personal information processed through this site. Under the GDPR and UK GDPR the equivalent term is data controller.

What we collect

Nothing that you type. There are no accounts, no contact forms, no comments and no mailing list. The tip calculator runs entirely in your browser and the amount you enter is never sent to us or stored anywhere.

Two things are processed simply as a consequence of the site working:

  • Server logs. Our hosting provider, Vercel, records the IP address, browser user-agent, requested page and timestamp of each request in order to deliver the site, keep it available and protect it from abuse. An IP address is treated as personal information under POPIA and the GDPR. These logs are retained by Vercel for a short period and are not used to build any profile of you.
  • Local storage in your browser. None is used. The one cookie this site can set is a session cookie for the private administration area, which is used only by the site operator. It is strictly necessary for that area to function and is never set for ordinary visitors.

Analytics

No analytics or measurement service is currently running on this site. If that changes, this page will be updated before it does, and we will use a privacy-preserving, cookieless provider that reports aggregate page counts rather than individual behaviour.

Affiliate links

Some links to travel services are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you book through them at no extra cost to you. When you follow one, the destination site becomes responsible for your data under its own privacy policy. We attach anonymous campaign parameters (indicating which country page and which offer you came from) so we can tell which guidance is genuinely useful. Those parameters identify a page, not a person. See our affiliate disclosure.

Who else processes data

  • Vercel Inc. — hosting and content delivery. Processes request logs as described above.
  • Neon Inc. — database. Stores editorial working data (publicly posted questions we may answer). It holds no information about site visitors.

Both are located outside South Africa, so the processing described above involves a transborder flow of information under section 72 of POPIA. Both operate under contractual data-protection terms that require a comparable level of protection.

Your rights

Under POPIA you may ask what personal information we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and object to its processing. If you are in the EU or the UK, the GDPR and UK GDPR give you equivalent rights including data portability. Because we hold no visitor records beyond transient server logs, in most cases the honest answer to a request will be that there is nothing to produce — but ask, and we will tell you.

Email privacy@whatthetip.com. If you are not satisfied with our response you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa), or to your local supervisory authority if you are in the EU or UK.

Children

This site is a travel reference aimed at adults. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly process any child’s information.

Changes

If what we do changes, this page changes first. The date at the top tells you when it was last revised.
