Do you tip taxi drivers in Japan?

Short answer

No tip

Pay the meter exactly. No rounding up.

Not expected

Japanese taxi drivers do not accept tips and will return your change to the yen. Lonely Planet describes rounding up as standard practice here, but Rough Guides is unambiguous that tipping is not expected anywhere in Japan and is likely to be politely refused, which matches the norm every other reference describes. Pay the meter. It is never wrong and never causes an awkward exchange. The doors open automatically and drivers handle luggage without expecting anything extra.

In practice

  • A ¥2,340 fare → pay ¥2,340 and take your change
