Do you tip at restaurants in Thailand?
Short answer
Round up, or 10%
Round up at local places, 10% at a proper restaurant.
OptionalCash preferred
At a street stall or local shophouse, pay the price and leave. At a sit-down restaurant, rounding up to the nearest 20–50 baht is normal, and 10% is generous. Rough Guides frames it in cash rather than percentages: 20–50 baht for good service, 100 or more for exceptional. If the bill already shows a 10% service charge, nothing further is needed.
In practice
- A ฿380 dinner → leave ฿400
- A ฿1,200 restaurant bill → leave ฿1,300
