Guides on Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley and city tours are routinely tipped and it forms a real part of their income. Lonely Planet puts South American guides at the equivalent of five to ten dollars per day, which is roughly this range. Trek porters are tipped separately and more generously.

Cards work in hotels, mid-range restaurants and tour agencies, but not in colectivos, street stalls or rural shops. Carry soles for tips.
