Dutch prices include service and staff are paid a living wage, so tipping is genuinely optional. Rounding up, or leaving 5–10% after a good meal, is normal without being expected. Nobody will comment either way.

Card tipping. The Netherlands is close to cashless. Many places take card or Dutch debit only. Terminals usually let you enter a total including a tip (a fooi), so say the amount you want before the server enters it.

  • Many restaurants and cafés do not accept cash at all. Check before assuming you can leave a note on the table.
  • Some venues take Maestro or local debit only and refuse foreign credit cards. Carry a backup.
