Brazil settles most of the question for you. Restaurants and bars add a 10% serviço, which is customary to pay and goes to the staff. Beyond that, tipping is modest and discreet. Tour guides are the notable exception, where the amounts are much higher.

  • The 10% serviço on a restaurant or bar bill is technically optional and you may decline it, but paying it is the norm and it reaches the staff.
  • Keep small notes. Rough Guides warns that change is genuinely hard to come by and a large note for a small purchase may be refused.
  • Brazilians are discreet about money. Lonely Planet makes the point that a tip should be handed over quietly rather than made a show of.
