Do you tip at restaurants in Austria?
Short answer
5–10%
Round up by 5–10%, stated when you pay.
Common
Five percent for a casual meal, closer to 10% at a nicer restaurant, which is the range Vienna's own tourist board gives. Lonely Planet groups Austria with Italy as round-up-only; the official guidance is more specific and is what this page follows. Round to a clean figure and tell the server that total as you hand over the money, leaving coins on the table and walking out is not how it is done here. Bills are settled at the table and splitting several ways is completely normal.
In practice
- A €43 bill → say 'fifty' and pay €50
- An €86 dinner for two → pay €95
